मंगल ग्रह जिसे लाल ग्रह के नाम से भी जाना जाता है । पृथ्वी के निकटतम ग्रहो में से एक है । बुध ग्रह के बाद मंगल सौरमंडल का दूसरा सबसे छोटा ग्रह है और यह सूर्य से चौथा निकटतम ग्रह है ।

पृथ्वी से टेलिस्कोप के द्वारा मंगल ग्रह देखने पर यह लाल रंग का दिखाई देता है , मंगल ग्रह के लाल होने का कारण इसकी सतह पर अत्यधिक मात्रा में पाया जाने वाला लौह ऑक्साइड है जो इसे लाल रंग प्रदान करता है ।

मंगल ग्रह को सूर्य के चारों ओर एक पूर्ण चकर लगाने में पृथ्वी से दोगुना समय लगता है । यदि हम पृथ्वी के साथ मंगल के घनत्व की तुलना करते हैं , तो हम पाएंगे कि यह पृथ्वी की तुलना में 100 गुना कम है ।

 मंगल ग्रह के दो प्राकृतिक उपग्रह ( चन्द्रमा ) है जिनका नाम क्रमश : Phobos & Deimos है । मंगल ग्रह की कोर को लेकर अभी तक अंतरिक्ष विज्ञानिको को पूरी सफलता नहीं मिली है । आपकी जानकारी के लिए बता दे मंगल ग्रह की सतह ठोस , तरल या दो अलग - अलग परतों से बनी है । इस पर विज्ञानिको में मतभेद रहे है ।                    

मंगल ग्रह का पड़ोसी ग्रह जिसे बृहस्पति ग्रह के नाम से जाना जाता है , अपने विशाल आकार के कारण मंगल की कक्षा को प्रभावित करने की क्षमता रखता है । क्या आप जानते है । March महीने का नाम Mars से ही निकला है ।

मंगल गृह पर एक दिन की लंबाई 24 घंटे og 37 मिनट की होती है व एक वर्ष 687 दिन का होता है । मंगल ग्रह द्वारा सूर्य की परिक्रमा की औसत गति 14.5 मील प्रति सेकंड के करीब है ।

मंगल सूर्य से चौथा ग्रह है और स्थलीय ग्रहों में अंतिम ग्रह के रूप में जाना जाता है जोकि सूर्य से लगभग 227,940,000 किमी दूर है । युद्ध के रोमन देवता Mars के नाम पर इस ग्रह का नाम Mars Planet पड़ा ।

मंगल की सतह का गुरुत्वाकर्षण पृथ्वी पर पाया जाने वाला गुरुत्वाकर्षण का लगभग 37 % है । सौरमंडल में ज्ञात सबसे ऊँचा ज्वालामुखी पर्वत मंगल ग्रह पर है । Olympus Mons एक 21 किमी ऊंचा और 600 किमी व्यास का ढाल ज्वालामुखी है जो अरबों साल पहले बना था ।
